The Baltimore Ravens are the first team to make a big splash ahead of the NFL trade deadline, acquiring linebacker Roquan Smith from the Chicago Bears on Monday.

The former number 8 overall pick in 2018 leads the league this season in tackles with 83, an area John Harbaugh’s defense desperately needs help with, currently 28th in yards allowed and 20th when it comes to points allowed.

Smith brings a range of talents to the Ravens, generating 607 tackles with seven interceptions in his NFL career while also being a two-time second-team All-Pro.

In return, Chicago will receive Baltimore’s second and fifth-round selection in next year’s draft, along with linebacker A.J. Klein.

The new Ravens linebacker, who was owed $5,408 million for the rest of this season, will be getting paid $4.833 million by Chicago, with the Ravens paying him the league minimum of $575,000 this year, according to sources.

For a while now, Baltimore had been reportedly in the market for a linebacker as Josh Bynes has struggled mightily and Patrick Queen has fallen well short of expectations.
newline
At the same time, they were supposedly close to landing Bobby Wagner back in March but ultimately lost out to the Los Angeles Rams.
newline
Baltimore has conceded 22.9 points a game this season, on pace for the worst defensive scoring for them since 2015.
newline
Smith is in the final year of his $9.7 million rookie contract with a fifth-year option after the Bears failed to reach an agreement with him to extend a deal over the offseason.

In addition to his impressive tackling, Smith has 2.5 sacks this season and a pair of interceptions.
