Detroit made a big move to improve its secondary next season, signing C.J. Gardner-Johnson to a one-year deal worth $8 million.

His new contract includes $6.5 million in guarantees with the former Philadelphia Eagle fresh off an outstanding campaign in which he had a career-high six interceptions, helping Philly make it to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2017 season.

Gardner-Johnson missed five games in the 2022 regular season due to a lacerated kidney but returned in time to help the Eagles capture the #1 seed in the NFC.

The 25-year-old joins an up-and-coming team with plenty of young pieces defensively, including Aidan Hutchinson, Malcolm Rodriguez and the newly acquired Cameron Sutton.

Also on Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys added some speed in the receiving game, acquiring Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans, giving up a fifth-round pick this year and a sixth-rounder in 2024 to get him.

Despite his captaincy being revoked in Houston last season and playing a mere 13 games, Cooks still led the Texans in receptions (57) and receiving yards (699).

Cooks adds some much-needed verticality to the Cowboys' in the pass catching department, which should complement a receiving corps that features CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup, with the latter coming back from a torn ACL in his left knee.

According to sources, the 29-year-old, who has $18 million guaranteed for 2023, restructured his Texans contract on Saturday so that Houston will pay $6 million, with the Cowboys covering the remaining $12 million.

He is under contract through 2024.

Since 2015 Cooks has put up six 1,000-yard receiving seasons, tied for the third-most in the NFL over that span, level with former Cowboy Amari Cooper, with Travis Kelce (seven) and Mike Evans (eight), the only receivers with more.
